Benefits
Light exposure impacts human health.
Circadian Rhythms are fundamental to life on Earth.
Light exposure is the primary mechanism for regulating our circadian rhythms. The impact of light on our circadian rhythm is closely tied to the intensity (brightness), spectrum (color) and timing of when we are exposed to it.
With the SPECK, you now can set and monitor your light exposure goals – such as getting a bright morning or avoiding light before bedtime.

Why track light exposure?
Sleep is essential to health. Regular, high-quality sleep supports physical and emotional well-being, while poor sleep increases the risk of diseases like cancer, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s. As a result, many wellness consumers now track their sleep using wearables.
How do you actually improve your sleep?
Healthy sleep depends on good sleep hygiene, including consistent sleep schedules and appropriate light exposure. Ideally, we get bright light during the day and darkness at night—but modern life often reverses this.
The SPECK light exposure wearable measures your daily light exposure, letting you see how bright daytime light improves sleep and nighttime light disrupts it.

Tracking light exposure with the SPECK
Originally designed for researchers, the SPECK has been redesigned for wellness consumers. It retains its highly accurate spectrometer—now in a smaller, lighter, wirelessly rechargeable device—and pairs with the SPECK Connect iOS app to deliver personalized feedback and recommendations to help optimize your light exposure patterns. The result is a system that provides clear feedback, based on scientific-grade light exposure measurements, that you can use to improve your sleep and circadian health.

SPECK Connect iOS App
Use the iOS app to access real-time lighting measurements and the light coach.
01
Now - Provides real-time lighting measurements from your SPECK.
02
Coach - Compares your light exposure to a “healthy light exposure” target.
03
Historical - Displays your historical day and night light exposure readings to help you track your progress.
04
Settings - Allows you to adjust your Light Coach times and choose Exposure Goal Difficulty.

Our Story
The SPECK was developed with funding from the National Institute on Aging to help people with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias manage light exposure to improve sleep and circadian health. Clinical trials show users consistently follow SPECK guidance, leading to measurable sleep improvements. Researchers have also used the SPECK to study light exposure’s impact on cognitive and cardiovascular health, long COVID recovery, and circadian lighting in buildings, including a pilot with the General Services Administration. Now available to individual users, the SPECK supports wellness consumers and people with sleep or circadian rhythm disorders. It is designed in California and manufactured in Michigan.
